Charles Frey, Riesling ‘La messe du matin’ 2022
The Frey family were pioneers in France's Alsace region, converting their vineyards to organic farming practices in 1997 and eventually being certified Demeter Biodynamic. Today, the winery is still pushing the boundaries of sustainability as the third generation of the Frey family has taken over. Their 14 hectares of holdings above the medieval village of Dambach-La-Ville, are backed up against the foothills of the Vosges mountains, shielded from prevailing winds on the edge of a plain stretching down to the Rhine river. The family manages 4 different vineyards on south-east facing slopes that feature granite soils. This type of earth compels the roots to penetrate deep into the ground to find nutrients. All told, the area’s vineyards are very well situated to produce stunning wines.
‘La messe du matin’ is an extremely limited production using hand harvested grapes from two of the domaine’s 40 year old Riesling plots. It is a dry white wine that is vinified in as natural a manner as possible with native yeast, unfiltered and no sulfites added. Aging is done in a mix of stainless steel tanks and 500L demi-muids to add structure and complexity. Showing a beautiful light yellow hue, scents of green apples, lemon peel and peach rise from the glass. On the palate it has a lovely fruit concentration combined with high acidity and a long precise dry finish.
At only 3000 bottles total for the ‘22 vintage, this was an extremely limited production.
