Les Granits de Bellevue 2023
Domaine de Leyre-Loup
Les Granits de Bellevue is a rare white wine from Beaujolais, crafted from Viognier grapes grown on granite terroir. In order to be officially granted Beaujolais AOP status, white wines from the region must be made from Chardonnay or Aligoté, but this offers a unique take on the area’s potential, with Jacque and Christoph Lanson choosing to plant Viognier instead, around 20 years ago. This choice has paid off beautifully, as the granitic soil’s ability to enhance minerality and complexity in a grape, complement Viognier’s floral, fruit-forward profile, creating a wine of exceptional character.
In the glass, Les Granits de Bellevue shines with a pale gold hue and overdelivers on aromatics of apricot, yellow peach, almond blossom, and honey. The palate is fresh yet full-bodied, with intense notes of stone fruit balanced by a citrusy finish. To preserve the wine’s brightness and structure, half of the juice is fermented in stainless steel vats, while the other half undergoes fermentation in demi-muids (600L French oak barrels), adding a roundness and smoothness to the final blend.
The 2023 vintage is only the fifth release, and with extremely limited cases available, this wine is a rare treasure. We were lucky enough to receive a small allocation at Nice Find & Co. Les Granits de Bellevue is a testament to the Lansons' bold vision for this particular vineyard. With each sip, this distinctive Viognier reflects the essence of the Bellevue terroir and the Lanson’s dedication to creating a complex, unique and memorable wine.
